The Rutherford County Election Commission will hold a town hall meeting on November 1st at 5:30 p.m. at the Rutherford County Courthouse to inform the public on requirements for voters to have a picture ID to vote in elections beginning in 2012.
Whether voting early or on Election Day, voters must present an ID containing the voter’s name and photograph. Acceptable forms of ID include: Tennessee drivers license with photo; United State passport; Department of Safety photo ID; photo ID issued by the federal or state government; United State Military photo ID; or gun permit with photo. College student photo IDs and photo IDs not issued by federal or state government are not acceptable.
Who is exempt? Voters who are residents in a licensed nursing home or assisted living center and who vote there, voters who are hospitalized, voters with a religious objection to being photographed, and voters who vote by absentee mail are exempt. Voters who vote absentee by mail can review requirements to do so at http://www.tn.gov/sos/election/bymail.htm .
Voters lacking a photo ID can obtain a free photo ID from the Tennessee Department of Safety. For more information, visit or call the Rutherford County Election Commission, 615-898-7743.
