Next Tuesday night, we will have a rare opportunity to meet a White House insider at Rep. Joe Carr’s T-Bones & Politics event. This annual evening of fellowship, food and entertainment will have as special guest former White House Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card, Jr.
During his years as Chief of Staff to President George W. Bush, Mr. Card had the unenviable job to aggressively monitor and limit the flow of information to the President. During a radio interview, he explained: “The President has to have time to eat, sleep and be merry, or he’ll make angry, grumpy decisions.” He continued and said, “I also have to make sure he has the right time to do the right thing for the country, and that he gets the right information in time, rather than too late.”
On September 11, 2001, it was his task to inform President Bush that the U.S. was under attack after the second airplane struck the World Trade Center. He was also a key player in the successful confirmation of two Supreme Court Justices. During the presidency of George H. W. Bush, Mr. Card served as Deputy Chief of Staff and as Transportation Secretary.
Before serving in the White House, Mr. Card, a native of Massachusetts, had a successful career in the private sector as President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Automobile Manufacturers Association (AAMA) and as Vice President for Government Relations at General Motors (GM).
Also scheduled to attend T-Bones & Politics this year is Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey and there will be entertainment provided by Jimmy Fortune of the Statler Brothers. Hope to see you there.
