2012 will be an interesting year politically locally and nationally and it all begins with your involvement! Your local Republican Party needs your time, your energy and your involvement to make sure that 2012 is indeed a successful year locally and nationally. Volunteers are needed for our various committees and volunteers will be needed for the many events that will be coming up in the new year.
2012 is at last here and what an exciting year it will be!

Will 2012 be the end of the Obama Administration?

Will 2012 be the year that Republicans regain the White House, Senate while holding onto the House?

Will 2012 be the year that Republicans hold onto the House and Senate at the State level?

Will 2012 be the year that “the last Democrat” leaves office and we win the County Road Superintendent and Property Assessor office(s)?

2012 will be an interesting year politically locally and nationally and it all begins with your involvement! Your local Republican Party needs your time, your energy and your involvement to make sure that 2012 is indeed a successful year locally and nationally. Volunteers are needed for our various committees and volunteers will be needed for the many events that will be coming up in the new year.

We have decided to continue our existing operation next to City Café. After looking at multiple options it was determined that it was in our best interest to stay in our current location. We will be open for business again in January right next door to the City Café as we have been for the past three years.

So drop in, say Hello and don’t forget to join the local party. All of your donations stay right here in Rutherford County to fund our operations locally. A dollar invested in your local party is a smart investment in ensuring a strong Republican Party of Rutherford County for years to come!

In closing, Happy New Year and may the year 2012 be your best year ever!

Statement from Chairman Austin Maxwell

This statement is the opinion of the chairman. It has not been endorsed or reviewed by the Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Rutherford County.
This statement is the opinion of the chairman. It has not been endorsed or reviewed by the Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Rutherford County.

“I, Austin Maxwell, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”

As an officer and veteran of the United States Military I took that oath over 20 years ago and have upheld it to my nation by deploying to Afghanistan and Iraq. I have spilt my own blood in the defense of this nation because I believe in “supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic”. The profession of arms is a personal decision. All are welcome to pursue it. If one chooses not to pursue the profession of arms and not join the military it does not make him less of an American or more of an American should he so choose or not choose. In the end we are all Americans and we should support and defend the constitution for not only this generation but for the many generations to come.

All Americans have the right to join the military provided they can pass the necessary requirements for entry and provided that they can honestly take this oath and “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic”. If one’s political or religious beliefs prohibit them from honestly taking this oath and supporting and defending our constitution they should not join the military.

As a combat advisor and embedded trainer with the Afghan National Army I witnessed a situation where one’s beliefs contradicted the oath. In this situation a Christian soldier stated to his sergeant that he would not fire his rifle at any person period because his religious and political beliefs prohibited him from doing so. You can only imagine the distrust and worry that this view created among the soldiers in this remote outpost in Afghanistan. In my final firefight in Afghanistan, myself and a handful of American soldiers fought over 200 Taliban while over 100 Afghan soldiers laid down and did not fire more than a few shots at the Taliban. Why?

Clearly, the answer in both of these situations is ideological beliefs. That is why I state that if your political, religious or ideological views prohibit you from honestly taking this oath which requires you to support and defend the Constitution of the United States please do not join the military. Your views could undermine the professionals and the profession of arms that has sworn to protect our freedoms everyday.

Representative Womick has expressed his constitutional right of free speech. He certainly has the right to express his views as we all do as Americans. I support him in his right of free speech. As an American, Veteran and Chairman I am expressing my right of free speech as well.

Unfortunately the Daily News Journal and its’ Editorial Board and others have used this issue as an attempt to divide our party and to divide our community by attempting to label Republicans as bigots and that disturbs me greatly. A great deal of what has been published in the newspaper generalizing republicans as bigots actually reflects bigotry on the part of the writer(s) and the DNJ itself. If anything, Republicans have historically championed the rights of all Americans and examples include:

June 24, 1940
Republican Party platform calls for integration of the armed forces; for the balance of his terms in office, FDR refuses to order it

September 30, 1953
Earl Warren, California’s three-term Republican Governor and 1948 Republican vice presidential nominee, nominated to be Chief Justice; wrote landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education

March 12, 1956
Ninety-seven Democrats in Congress condemn Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education, and pledge to continue segregation

May 6, 1960
Republican President Dwight Eisenhower signs Republicans’ Civil Rights Act of 1960, overcoming 125-hour, around-the-clock filibuster by 18 Senate Democrats

August 4, 1965
Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen (R-IL) overcomes Democrat attempts to block 1965 Voting Rights Act. 94% of Senate Republicans vote for landmark civil right legislation while 27% of Democrats oppose it. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is passed and signed into law which abolished literacy tests and other measures devised by Democrats to prevent African-Americans from voting.

February 19, 1976
Republican President Gerald Ford formally rescinds Democrat President Franklin Roosevelt’s notorious Executive Order authorizing internment of over 120,000 Japanese-Americans during WWII

September 15, 1981
Republican President Ronald Reagan establishes the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, to increase African-American participation in federal education programs

June 29, 1982
Republican President Ronald Reagan signs 25-year extension of 1965 Voting Rights Act

August 10, 1988
Republican President Ronald Reagan signs Civil Liberties Act of 1988, compensating Japanese-Americans for deprivation of civil rights and property during World War II internment ordered by FDR

November 21, 1991
Republican President George H. W. Bush signs Civil Rights Act of 1991 to strengthen federal civil rights legislation

August 20, 1996
Bill authored by U.S. Rep. Susan Molinari (R-NY) to prohibit racial discrimination in adoptions, part of Republicans’ Contract With America, becomes law

To label our party and our party leadership as bigots is absurd and preposterous. Our party has historically championed the rights of all Americans. The DNJ and its Editorial Board owe our community an apology for such outlandish claims as in the end they are only trying to divide our community, the citizens of Rutherford County and our party.

Respectfully,

Austin K. Maxwell
Chairman
Republican Party of Rutherford County

Remembering America’s Veterans

The Republican Party of Rutherford County is honored to recognize the men and women of our nation’s military-past and present, at home and abroad, in war and in peace. We admire and appreciate the contributions of veterans to our nation. They have protected and defended us while making our way of life possible.
The Republican Party of Rutherford County is honored to recognize the men and women of our nation’s military-past and present, at home and abroad, in war and in peace. We admire and appreciate the contributions of veterans to our nation. They have protected and defended us while making our way of life possible.

As we prepare to observe Veterans Day on Nov. 11th, Americans must pause to honor the men and women who hold the respected title of “veteran”. Over the course of 235 years of independence, nearly 50 million patriots have stood watch over our liberty. We are beneficiaries of their vigilance and determination to uphold the democratic principles on which our nation was founded. This Veterans Day is an opportunity for us to give thanks for the peace and prosperity that are ours, while heightening our anticipation of opportunities that lie ahead.

Time and again, Americans in uniform have shown themselves to be the lifeblood of our nation, a strong and vital force for good. They have repeatedly met challenge and conflict on our behalf. For us as well as our friends and allies, our veterans tenaciously held posts on lonely ridges, spent long days and nights at sea, and faced danger in the skies. They sacrificed their youth, their time, and their very lives for our fundamental principles of human dignity, political and religious liberty, and limited government based on the rule of law.

The last one hundred years have been called the “American Century” as our nation rose to unsurpassed levels of world leadership and influence. Our values became the model for those in other lands because they represent the basic longings of people everywhere. America’s growing power and wealth, however, brought new responsibilities, which came at a heavy cost. Early in the American Century, our vigilance and willingness to help the oppressed placed Americans in the trenches of World War I. Among that “war to end all wars” were more than 53,000 American battle deaths and 204,000 wounded.

Since then, American men and women were called upon to serve on the battlegrounds of World War II, in Korea, Vietnam, Beirut, Grenada, Somalia, Haiti, the Persian Gulf, Bosnia, and Kosovo. Even now, we must remember the 4,500 fallen in the War in Iraq and 1,800 killed in Afghanistan.

In stone and mortar, Americans have expressed their gratitude. Across the nation, memorials and monuments to servicemen and women recall their valor and victories, while demonstrating America’s commitment to never forget the sacrifices of those who served.

It has been said that how a nation remembers its veterans is a clear demonstration of its character and conscience. By our commemoration, we reaffirm our belief that veterans-individually and collectively-are living symbols of what America values and honors. It is, in large part, the deeds of our veterans that bind us to our past, strengthen us in the present, and inspire us to meet the challenges that we face as a nation.

A friend of mine once told me that in order to make steel you first had to go through fire. We have seen our share of fires in the past year. Regardless of which candidate you will support it is time for us to unite so that the morning of March 7th we are moving forward together and as strong as steel.
In a vote of 11 to 1 the Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Rutherford County reversed its previous decision to hold a caucus in 2012 and will now instead hold a primary on March 6th, 2012 which is the same day as the Presidential Preference Primary.

The Republican Party did this as well in the 2008 Presidential Preference Primary with over 18,000 votes cast that day for the Presidential Candidates and over 10,000 votes were cast as well for the candidates for Property Assessor and Road Superintendent. As of October 1st we are 157 days away from casting our votes for who we individually feel is the best choice for President. This same opportunity exists as well for who we individually feel are the best choices for Property Assessor and Road Superintendent.

A friend of mine once told me that in order to make steel you first had to go through fire. We have seen our share of fires in the past year. Regardless of which candidate you will support it is time for us to unite so that the morning of March 7th we are moving forward together and as strong as steel.

In the meantime, I need for you to get involved with either your time or your money. We are in need of volunteers to help the party grow at the precinct level or volunteers on our numerous committees. From a funding perspective a $5 a month donation helps support the local party and it gives you our “Right Card” which unlocks discounts at various merchants in Rutherford County. I saved 10% last week when I dined at Three Brothers Deli off the square. Check it out and donate by visiting http://www.rutherfordgop.org

Additionally, we will be scaling back our Party HQ and temporarily closing it towards the end of the year. The money that we save by doing this will be utilized in the upcoming 2012 election cycle. We will re-open the party office sometime in late June of 2012. In the meantime stay in touch via our website at http://www.rutherfordgop.org

In the meantime, get involved and let’s move our party forward together in 2012!

I look forward to seeing you soon!

To all of our Republican friends in Rutherford County…get involved! Get active in your local party and precincts and let’s make the 2012 Caucus as successful as possible by maximizing attendance and participation.
In a vote of 8 to 7, the Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Rutherford County voted to hold a caucus in 2012 for the Republican candidates for Property Assessor and Road Superintendent.

While I personally voted for, and still feel that a primary would have been a better decision, now is the time to move forward together and ensure that the 2012 Caucus is a massive success.

One way that you can help ensure that the Caucus is a success is to do the following: Get Involved!

In the coming months, precinct meetings will be held in which delegates will be elected. A delegate will attend the County Caucus and will be able to vote the night of February 7th on the candidate that he feels will best represent the Republican Party in the August 2012 General Election. Regardless if you wanted a Caucus or a Primary in 2012, now is not the time to sit back and wait until the August 2012 General Election. Now is the time to get involved and step forward and become a Precinct Captain or a Delegate or an Alternate Delegate or a volunteer in some capacity on the many committees that we have.

So…to all of our Republican friends in Rutherford County…get involved! Get active in your local party and precincts and let’s make the 2012 Caucus as successful as possible by maximizing attendance and participation.

Additionally, we will be scaling back our Party HQ and temporarily closing it towards the end of the year. The money that we save by doing this will be utilized in the upcoming 2012-election cycle. We will re-open the party office sometime in late June of 2012. Until then, stay in touch via our website at http://www.rutherfordgop.org

In the meantime, get involved and let’s move our party forward together in 2012!

I look forward to seeing you soon!

As summer winds down and, as we head into fall, a season of change is not far off in 2012. The change that began in November of 2010 with the House of Representatives being recaptured by the Republicans will hopefully continue with fiscally conservative candidates ascending to the Presidency, House and Senate. That is how we can take our Country back and solve our fiscal and budgetary problems. The task is not easy, but I believe that, as a nation, we will solve them together.
My Fellow Republicans:

As summer winds down and, as we head into fall, a season of change is not far off in 2012. The change that began in November of 2010 with the House of Representatives being recaptured by the Republicans will hopefully continue with fiscally conservative candidates ascending to the Presidency, House and Senate. That is how we can take our Country back and solve our fiscal and budgetary problems. The task is not easy, but I believe that, as a nation, we will solve them together.

Locally, we have a significant decision as an Executive Committee to make in the coming months. Do we want to proceed with a Primary during the Presidential Preference Primary in March of 2012 or do we wish to proceed with a Party Caucus that chooses our candidates for offices such as Property Assessor? Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. My concern rests in what is the option that enables the will of the people to be met while keeping taxpayer expense to a minimum? If we pursue the Presidential Preference Primary, there is no cost to the taxpayers as the Primary would occur at the same time. Assuming that there will be a significant and reasonable turnout during the Primary, this is a reasonable option while ensuring the will of the people is met with no taxpayer cost while generating excitement at the local level.

The Caucus has the advantage of no taxpayer expense being involved. Participation will be the key, so that we ensure that we have a sizeable delegation of local Republican Party members that are solid Republican Party voters if we decide to pursue this course of action. The last thing we would want as a Party is to not have maximum participation in a Caucus to choose our candidates for the General Election.

In closing, the decision will not be easy but, as a committee, we will discuss it in the coming days at our meeting on August 16th and make a final decision at our September meeting. In the meantime, I would welcome your feedback and opinion. Feel free to drop me an email at director@rutherfordgop.org and let me know how you feel about a Primary or a Caucus. It is your Party and, as your Chairman, I value your opinion and seek your involvement in 2012.

Forward Together!

As I sit back and watch the race for the Republican nomination unfold it is clear to me that two items will decide the race for the presidency: Personalities and Pocketbooks………………..
First, let me be clear: I am not running for President. I have enough gray in my hair already and certainly do not need anymore. However, as I sit back and watch the race for the Republican nomination unfold it is clear to me that two items will decide the race for the presidency: Personalities and Pocketbooks………………..

The Republican who has the best chance of unseating President Obama will be the person who can match him on personality and charisma. Reagan had it and we saw what he did to Carter. Clinton had it and we saw what he did to Bush I. Bush II had it and we saw what he did to Gore. In my business (as in any endeavor) people buy from people and hopefully a candidate will emerge with the energy, enthusiasm, charisma and personality to capture the American people’s interest. A charismatic, enthusiastic Republican candidate that can neutralize the personality and charisma of Obama stands a better chance of winning. Remember what Bill Clinton did to Bob Dole? Enough said!

Pocketbooks = The Economy. If the economy is still suffering chances are the American people will make a change. Again, who is the candidate with the personality and experience and ideas that will turn our economy around? Whoever answers those two questions will receive my vote.

Whoever is elected will have some significant challenges and if they asked me what to do………. here are ten things I would recommend that they do:

1.	Pass a balanced budget amendment so that going forward we live within our means every year as a nation.
2.	Pass an amendment that reduces the deficit by 3% a year until it is eliminated.
3.	While still maintaining a strong national defense reduce our expenditures in countries like Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Invest those dollars in America, in reducing the deficit and in strengthening the National Guard & Reserve while shrinking the active duty component of our total force. Less active duty + more national guard/reserve = cost effectiveness.
4.	Utilize the National Guard and Reserve to secure our border with Mexico.
5.	Evict persons living in the United States illegally unless that person wishes to a) Apply for citizenship and b) Pay remuneration for federal services received since illegally entering the United States.
6.	Create energy independence by drilling for oil, building refineries, utilizing Nuclear energy as well as wind and solar solutions.
7.	Keep the Bush tax cuts while cutting capital gains taxes & corporate taxes. When Reagan cut taxes…….. revenues did not go down………….they went up!
8.	Repeal Obama care. There are more cost effective ways to offer healthcare coverage via community clinics and other organizations not mandating additional rules that will strangle business owners and taxpayers in time.
9.	Fix Social Security. Either cut payments or lengthen the time until you can begin drawing SSI but ignoring the problem of funding SSI is not going to make it better or viable long term. It has to be fixed with a long term solution in mind.
10.	Pass an amendment that ensures a 1 term limit for Senators (6 years) and 3 term limit for Representatives ( 6 years). If the President is limited to 2 terms (8 years) why not limit the House and Senate to similar lengths of service?

I believe that America’s best days are still ahead. By balancing our budget, reducing our deficit, securing our borders, creating energy independence, cutting taxes and repealing government mandated healthcare we will create an environment in which America can once again thrive for not only our generation but future generations.

I look forward to seeing you at the annual picnic on July 2nd! See you soon!

One of the most awesome sights that one can see in Rutherford County is the “Healing Field Flags of Remembrance” off of Medical Center Parkway near Maplegrove Drive. Over 1500 American Flags will be flown in the honor of those that have served or sacrificed for our great nation. The opening ceremony is Saturday morning May 28th at 11:00 AM and will be emceed by State Senator Bill Ketron. The event is free of charge and open to the public daily. Flags can be purchased in advance at http://www.healingfield.org/murfreesboro or by calling (615) 641-0121. You will not want to miss this so be sure to come by and see this event during Memorial Day weekend.

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Forward Together: The Bright Dawn

It has been two and a half weeks since the world’s most wanted murderer met his demise at the hands of the Navy’s “Seal Team Six”. Like you I have had my moments of elation and satisfaction that the last thing seen by this coward was American service men pointing the business end of an M4 carbine his way before he left this earth. Like all Americans I have reflected at the sacrifice by our nation and by so many of our service members and families of the price that has been paid to hunt down and render justice to this murderer.

In these past two weeks President Obama has enjoyed his day in the sun and has gotten the usual “bump” that one would expect in public approval polls. The Washington Post reported prior to the raid that his overall job performance was 47% and was bumped to 56% post raid. Interestingly, his rating on the economy was rated at 42% and it was bumped down to 40% after the raid.

Let’s go back to May of 1991 for a moment. George H. Bush was riding high post Desert Storm with a high approval rating….. yet a mere 18 months later he was voted out of office in November of 1992. Why?

Simply put it was and still is “the economy” that determines Presidential races. Bush I lost based upon his handling of the economy. I believe that the economy will determine who wins in November of 2012 and based upon the president’s policies of runaway spending, government bailouts and “Obama Care” I don’t see our economy recovering under his leadership. Case in point: How do you think Rutherford County Government can afford to comply with “Obama Care”? How can local business afford to comply with “Obama Care”? The mandates from the federal government for healthcare will indirectly force painful choices and possible tax increases at the state and local level which affects all of us. In the end, the federal government will have indirectly raised taxes or reduced services on you as a citizen in order to enact and deliver Obama Care.

President Reagan said in his final letter that “for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead” and I believe that he was and still is correct. There is a bright dawn ahead in Rutherford County, in Tennessee and in this great nation. Better days are indeed ahead and by electing fiscally conservative Republican candidates at all levels of government our economy and great nation will continue to see many bright dawns in the coming years.

I look forward to seeing you soon!
