Hello Fellow Republicans

Notice I didn’t specifically greet only “fellow Members”. Of course, I am not initiating this week’s blog with a negative connotation; but rather just as a reminder to everyone that we need your support…
Hello Fellow Republicans,

Notice I didn’t specifically greet only “fellow Members”. Of course, I am not initiating this week’s blog with a negative connotation; but rather just as a reminder to everyone that we need your support and involvement by being an actual member of the Rutherford County G.O.P.. I understand it is difficult at times to devote the hours you would like due to work, family commitments and other obligations each one of you may have. I simply want to convey that we need good people to join the Party in order to further the conservative principles we all hold so dear for the benefit of our family, friends and future children or grandchildren who will reside here in Rutherford County.

Okay, so I have made my pitch to you for the week, let’s move on to discuss some of the other happenings within the Party recently. Our new Executive Committee met on March 19th for the monthly meeting. I want to express my congratulations formally to each of the new and returning members of the committee. If you click on the Executive Committee section of the website, you will find the names and email addresses of each person currently holding office within the local Party. I would encourage everyone to get to know each one of our leadership team by contacting them directly, whether for just an introduction or if there is a specific issue you would like to discus with the committee member.

There has been a great deal of talk about the coming 2014 elections; however, I would like to concentrate on the here and now for the entire Party concerned. A tree cannot blossom as it should without firm roots and a solid trunk. If we want to maintain the offices we already hold and gain future positions in Rutherford County or State government, we must ensure the local party is based with a large group of committed Republican voters. Now, in 2013, is a great opportunity to grow the Party for the sake of the ideology we ALL possess. This is the time for ALL those who profess to be Republicans, to join in and move ahead; leaving any personal gain or particular preference for their own conservative candidate as the issue for 2014. After all, isn’t being a Republican more than just going to the polls one day every two years? Is it not a way of life, a way of thinking about government and those who govern us? Each one of you has the ability to make a difference and to leave a mark on this community that will affect those around you; all you have to do is be involved.

In summation, I want to also congratulate the new Young Republican’s Chairman, Scott Kimberly, on his election to the position. I have great faith and confidence in Scott, and I know he will working to make the YR’s the best organization it can be. He will also be an asset to the County Executive Committee as a voting member. Good job Scott, now the real work begins! Remember to save the date of May 18 for Reagan Day. The Executive Committee is working toward providing more information on the who, what and where for this year’s event; just make sure to go ahead and mark your calendar for the date. I will be updating the blog as frequently as possible. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to contact me or to contact our headquarters if you have questions or if you would like to volunteer. God Bless, and hope to see you at the meeting on April 2nd at 6:30.

Inaugural Blog from New Chairman Jeffrey L. Peach

First of all, I want to thank all of the Republican delegates that took the time out of your busy schedules on February 9th and again on February the 23rd in order to participate in the convention process. Secondly, I would also like to congratulate the new Executive Committee members elected at the convention. It is an honor for me to work with the entire group chosen to lead the party for the next two years.

Just as I referenced at the recent convention, it is important to note the Executive Committee is only the coaching staff of the local G.O.P.. You, the hard working conservative men and women of Rutherford County, you are the true players. Without good, solid and involved members, the party cannot accomplish its mission to further the conservative principles we all share and expect from those in public office.	As a new member, a returning member or just renewing your membership; it is imperative to point out that your paid dues are only one prong of what being a member of the local party is all about. In order for the local G.O.P. to complete its mission, we request and need your personal involvement. A local political party without volunteering members is likened to a church without a Sunday School staff, a choir leader or youth minister. Just as it would seem futile for your church to operate without these key figures, the G.O.P. cannot be as effective without the assistance from each one of you in one capacity or another. You have heard the well-known call, “Join and Help”, so you have now successfully completed the first portion by being a member. Now, it’s time for the “Help” portion to begin.

Obviously, I am extremely cognizant that many of you have your own obligations on a daily or weekly basis. There may be school functions, sporting events, church functions or even other civic organizational obligations pre-scheduled for you. However, I do fully believe one of our founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, was insightful when he declared “if you want something done, ask a busy person”. We could discuss the meanings of this famous quote, but for me it was a psychological observation the historical patriarch and inventor referenced. That is; busy people understand how to get things done, they know how to triage their time and busy people tend to be highly efficient, specifically when the amount of time to complete a task are condensed. Saying that, we need not only those of you who have retired from employment or have light schedules, we need those “busy” members described above as well. What you do today can have lasting effects on your neighbors, your community and more importantly, your loved ones living here in our community.

You see, while some citizens may not have adoration for the word “Politics” and you may have even heard comments from other well-meaning neighbors about avoiding any interaction with the political process. While the current state of “politics” in certain areas of our state or at the Washington D.C level can create a sense of disappointment and a desire to avoid any submersion with all things political, it is now more important than ever to stand up in support of what IS right and for all of those principles that brought you to the local party to begin with. The reason for your involvement and the key component to persuade gaining new members is this; Politics touches every facet of our lives. It affects the quality of schools your children are attending, the safety of your family, the kind of jobs brought to your community, the amount of money you are able to keep after earning a full day’s pay or even the property rights you enjoy. Of course, I could fill pages of areas in your life and the lives of your children that “politics” affects. I say this, not as some rhetoric, but as a motivator to remind you not only of the positive choice you have already made by deciding to be proactive in your community, but to also encourage your participation in the local G.O.P. on a personal level. I promise the return you will receive from your investment of time will exceed the usual expectations one has with a common retirement plan these days, minus the funds of course. We go to great lengths to plan for our loved ones and children in monetary security in preparation for our absence. Shouldn’t we also strive just as adamantly to provide a positive government legacy for our loved ones?

There is no time better than the present. If you wait until you “have time”, the likelihood is that will never happen. If you have not formally joined the Republican Party of Rutherford County, I would encourage you to do so. In addition, speak with your friends and family about joining the local G.O.P.. I look forward to the next two years and I hope to see each one of you involved in the near future.

Chairman Austin Maxwell’s Final Chairman’s Blog

February 7, 2013
Chairman Austin Maxwell
Republican Party of Rutherford County
111 East Main Street
Murfreesboro, TN 37130

Dear Republicans:

This is my final Chairman’s message as I will not be seeking the chairmanship in our upcoming precincts and convention meeting taking place on February 9th and February 23rd respectively. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as chairman for the past two years. I look forward to serving as past Chairman and helping the new Executive Committee continue to build and grow the Republican Party of Rutherford County.

Notice that I did not say build and grow other organizations outside the Republican Party of Rutherford County. These organizations in many cases are conservative in nature and in some cases non-partisan in nature. They are trying to grow just as much as the Republican Party of Rutherford County is trying to grow.

If you are considering seeking office in the upcoming precinct meetings and convention process I would ask you to keep two things in mind. The Bible says to “love thy neighbor”. The Bible also says that “no man can serve two masters”. As members of the Executive Committee and the Republican Party we must carefully balance our love for other conservative entities while also serving for what we were elected to do as members of the Executive Committee of the RPRC. If you are going to seek office and serve on the Executive Committee do so to advance the local Republican Party……. not other entities outside the party.

So as we move towards the precinct meetings on February 9th and convention on February 23rd here are two things to consider:

The Chairmanship: Stability, Experience and Time are necessary qualities that the next chairman will need to possess. I believe that I have brought stability to the office and experience from previous executive committees I have served on. Time is the one thing that has escaped me as I have had less and less time to focus on the chairmanship due to work, the military and my family. Last week I moved my 78 year-old mother to Murfreesboro and so I know I will continue to have a lack of time to serve effectively in the position as chairman had I chose to run again. Whoever is the next chairman needs to be chairman for at least two years (stability) while bringing past experience on the EC along with his/her time. Time is the one thing that we will need from the next chairman.

The Next Executive Committee: I believe that the next executive committee will face two critical events that will place the committee under extreme duress and scrutiny. The first issue is the decision to hold a Primary or Caucus in 2014 for the seats of County Mayor, Trustee, Sheriff, Register of Deeds, Circuit Court Clerk and County Clerk. All told that is six offices. During the last cycle only two offices were affected (Property Assessor & Road Superintendent) and there was still significant scrutiny directed towards the members of the committee. Imagine the scrutiny and pressure that is forthcoming as six county wide offices are up for grabs via the party’s nomination at a caucus or county-wide primary. I personally believe that a primary is still the best and fairest way to elect the parties nominees for office in 2014 and that is what I will support and champion as past chairman.

Lastly, the next committee will weigh in on and decide if we want to call for a partisan election for nominees to the County Commission. I fundamentally believe that if we called for partisan elections and found effective Republican candidates for all of the races there is no reason why 13 or 14 Republicans could not be elected to the County Commission. Again, there are bound to be multiple factors in play by multiple parties as to why this is a good idea and why it is a bad idea.

In closing, I sum this entire letter up by asking you to ask yourself and others if you have the energy, desire, intestinal fortitude and thick skin to continue to serve effectively on the next Executive Committee for 2013-2014. IF you do then please volunteer and serve! Most importantly, as we move forward do not let the outside parties manipulate the party to serve their interest. Instead, ask them to put aside those entities and give of their time and energy to advance the Republican Party in Rutherford County.

Thank you for all you do and have done. It has been a pleasure to serve as your Chairman.

Respectfully,

Austin K. Maxwell
Chairman
Republican Party of Rutherford County

Cost of Federal Regulations Reached $518 Billion in Obama’s First Term

A recent report by the American Action Forum (AAF) found that in President Obama’s first term in office, the total cost incurred by businesses from federal regulations has been $518 billion. This figure includes the cost of proposed rules, final rules, and interim rules, and is more than the combined GDP of Norway and Portugal. By tracking every proposed and final regulation that appears in the Federal Register, the AAF compiled its report, which is summarized at http://americanactionforum.org/print/topic/piling-year-regulation.

•	While Obama’s Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory affairs, Cass Sunstein, may argue that regulatory rescission saved businesses $2.5 billion last year, any savings were negated by the $236 billion in new regulations that were proposed and implemented.

•	Last year the White House disregarded its obligation to publish an accounting of regulations in April and October of every year according to the Regulatory Flexibility Act. A spring edition was never released and the fall edition was put out in December. The White House also failed to report new paperwork burdens on businesses as a result of these regulations by not releasing the Information Collection Budget. The White House also failed to release its “Report to Congress on the Benefits and Costs of Federal Regulations.”

•	AAF points out that while many assume the Environmental Protection Agency is the “sole driver of new burdens,” the “top two proposed rules in 2012 and top final rule this year were either energy or fuel conservation rules.” The year 2013 awaits five new conservation rules.

•	In the past four years, the projected cost of proposed and interim regulations has been much lower than the actual cost of the final regulation except in 2011, when regulations on the whole were curbed. In 2009, the projected cost of proposed and interim regulations was $921 million, but the actual cost was $83 billion. In 2010, the price of heavy regulation was $104 billion more than projected. In 2011, the actual cost of regulations was $144 billion less than projected, but in 2012 the cost of regulations was $195.2 billion more than projected.

•	In 2012 alone, White House officials instituted regulations costing businesses $236 billion.

These are just some of the AAF findings in the report. To learn more about this issue and to see the graphs and charts AAF composed on the 2012 Top Proposed Rules by Cost, the 2012 Top Final Rules by Cost, the 2012 Top Regulations by Paperwork Burdens, and the Industry Regulation Index, which breaks down the financial burden these regulations impose by industry and year, check out the AAF report.

Thank you to all who contributed your time, resources and talents to Republican efforts in 2012. Although we didn’t win every election this past year, with your support of our party and of our candidates, we had many Republican victories in local, state and federal elections.

With the 2012 elections in the history books, it’s now time to start looking forward to elections in 2014 and, yes, even in 2016. In 2013, will you help grow our party? It can be as simple as inviting someone to one of our county Republican club meetings or just having someone sign up for our emails. If you haven’t been to a club meeting yourself lately, this coming year is a great time to get involved. Also, the date for our annual Reagan Day Dinner will be announced soon—think about asking someone to come to the event that hasn’t attended recently (or ever) and help contribute to our local county party.

Again, thanks to each of you who contributed to the efforts of our county Republican Party this past year and I hope that you will join me in laying the groundwork for Republican victories in 2014 and beyond.

Happy New Year and best wishes for 2013!

From now through November 1st (excluding Sundays), you can cast your vote for President, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, State Senate, and State House. Don’t wait until Election Day to stand up and let your voice be heard.

Consider taking a friend or family member to the polls during the next two weeks. We must support our strong, conservative candidates at all levels of government who believe in our Republican Principles of free enterprise, traditional values, limited government, more personal responsibility, and border security.

Locally, Rutherford County has several of the most important races in the Volunteer State. We must work to maintain our majorities in the State House and State Senate by sending candidates to the state legislature who will fight for Tennessee values and the Tennessee Constitution. We must continue to say “NO” to intrusion by the federal government whenever it is unwarranted or ill advised. But, this will require conservative, bold republicans to serve and to take a stand.

Here are our candidates in the General Election:

	President Mitt Romney
	U.S. Senate Bob Corker
U.S. House of Representatives, 4th District	Scott DesJarlais
State Senator, 14th District Jim Tracy
State Representative, 34th District Rick Womick
State Representative, 37th District Dawn White
State Representative, 48th District Joe Carr
State Representative, 49th District Mike Sparks

See you bright and early at the polls. As they say, “honk your horn when you are through” and make this election a celebration of Tennessee’s cultural trend to a consideration of people first and government last!

The President can toss around rhetoric, but he can’t run away from his record. Locally, things are better than in most parts of our nation, due in large part to the fiscal restraint and business-friendly Republican elected officials serving the citizens of Rutheford County.

Sincere thanks to all the Republican candidates who participated in yesterday’s primaries. I also want to congratulate the following candidates on their Republican Primary wins:

United State Senate: Bob Corker
U.S. Congress, 4th District: Scott DesJarlais, M.D.
TN Senate, 14th District: Jim Tracy
TN House, 34th District: Rick Womick
TN House, 37th District: Dawn White
TN House, 48th District: Joe Carr
TN House, 49th District: Mike Sparks

In the Rutherford County General Election, over 10,800 voters chose Republican Greg Brooks to serve as Road Superintendent for the next four years. He will run the office in a sound, fiscally conservative manner.

In the contest for Property Assessor, incumbent Republican Bill Boner received over 8,500 votes which were, unfortunately, not enough to defeat his Democrat opponent. We thank Mr. Boner for serving the citizens of Rutherford County for the last four years and wish him the best in his future endeavors.

Thanks, finally, to all of the Republican voters who cast a vote for any of the candidates. Overall, we saw a solid turnout in the Republican Primary and it is my hope that the enthusiasm, excitement and turnout will carry over to the General Election in November.
